The Birth Project goes to the CAM/MANA Conference

Exciting news!
The Birth Project, along with first-time-ever prints and cards of the Birth Project will be displayed at the joint Canadian Association of Midwives and the Midwives Alliance of North America for the North American Midwifery Conference in Niagara Falls on November 9-12 2011.

This is my first conference, and I'm going both as a vendor and a 'delegate', or conference-goer. My paintings will be displayed throughout the conference area, and I will have a table to sell the prints and smaller paintings. What an exciting opportunity!

One of my original paintings will be up for auction at the Live Auction and Dance event.
I'm excited to meet a fellow birth-artist Amy Swagman from The Mandala Journey.

If you're going, stop by and say Hi! I'll have Jethro Vader in tow, and will only charge $.05 to squeeze his succulent thighs. Hoping for an enriching conference experience, and a couple sales would be nice too! I'd love to see some small pieces of the Birth Project go home to hang in midwives, doulas and birth-lovers homes and offices!

YWCA Woman of Distinction Award

Recently I had the honour of being a nominee for the YWCA Women of Distinction awards. I was nominated for the 'Arts and Culture' category, and my Birth Project was highlighted, as well as my community involvement with Friends of Muskoka Midwives and La Leche League Leader. I was shocked to hear my name called as the 'winner' at the Gala event, as the nominees were highly respected artists with many years on me! How exciting, what an honour and surpise. Thank you to my nominators and to all the amazing women I'm blessed to share my life with!

Prints from 'The Birth Project'

So, simply because I've had so many requests, I've decided to offer prints from some of my paintings. I'm thrilled 'The Birth Project' paintings have been so well received among those immersed in birthing culture. I hesitated to make prints because I'm a painter, and as a professional fine artist I want to devote my time to the making and promotion of my original paintings. However, I realize that purchasing my large-scale work is unattainable for many. I decided I would love to know that my images can be hung in offices and homes that work tirelessly for women, and I'd love my images to help empower and encourage more women.

I have two more paintings to upload to the website, and I may make changes depending on response. Please send me your feedback!

Also, this website was personally recommended to me for the exceptional quality of prints, security and service.

Please go here http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/amanda-greavette.html to view the print options.

Latest Creation

I'm pleased to share that we've added baby#4 to the family! Jethro Vader Douglas was born April 22, 2011 at 6:30pm. We welcomed him at home, amidst a family dinner (not literally) shortly after realizing I was in labour.

All 9 Paintings from 'Living in the Body'

Here (finally) are photos of all 9 paintings I am exhibiting in 'Living in the Body'. Forgive the quality of some of the images, please, they were just taken while hanging on the gallery wall and in passing- proper edited versions will be put on the website soon. This at least gives the scope of the work. Listed below the peices are the titles and sizes in inches.
'Living in the Body: Milk and Honey' 49"x71"
'You've got roots, cannot be torn from under
Won't you shake it like you've never done before' 36"x72"
(F. Ford/Be Good Tanyas)
'Three little birds were on my doorstep
singing sweet songs, a melody pure and true,
this is my message to you...' 82"x59"
(B. Marley)

'She is a new creation, the old has gone and the new has come' 50"x72"

'Ring the bells that still can ring,
Forget your perfect offering,
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in' 32"x53"
(L. Cohen)

'Curiosity far greater than the fear
It felt so simple, so prodigious at the same time
Incredible things are happening in the world
Magical things are happening in the world' 60"x48"
(Stereolab/Iron and Wine)

'And you took to me like a gull takes to the wind' 54"x36"
(Shins)

'It's a Human Thing (it's a girl?? it's a girl!!) 48"x36"
(Be Good Tanyas)

'The Delivery (oh my baby! oh, my baby!!) 36x48

Hanging the Show

Here are some photos from the day we hung the show

Paintings being brought in and stacked up before sorting it all out
Two very relieved and happy artists that it all fit

A glimpse of the gallery hung with paintings, before the work was done. What a great space, eh? Gallery 1313 was the perfect location for the show with a big area for our big paintings. All the peices fit perfectly. It was like they were born there ;)

More Press for 'Living in the Body'

The exhibit and my work has gotten a lot of press, especially on the internet! Many thanks to 'Peaceful Parenting' for the following blogpost, which in turn spurned other posts and links. It's a great feature of my work and it encourages local blogfollowers to check out the show- thank you!
Peaceful Parenting post- 'Toronto Art Exhibit...'

Related are a couple of other blogs mentioning the show;
The Joy of This is a lovely blog, and she also displays some of the older 'Birth Project' paintings

Another great blog my work:
Wild as Weeds

Jennifer Posti was also reviewed by Toronto art critic Peter Goddard in the Toronto Star, as
'this week's entertainment picks'. Way to go Jen! Jen's show 'Stay at Home' is running at Gallery 1313 while 'Living in the Body' is running.

Commissions:
I've had lots of inquiries on whether I accept commissions. I do welcome commissions; birth, pregnancy or otherwise. Please contact me to discuss your request at rose_arc@hotmail.com
For reference, I work life-size, and the rate is approx $125/square foot.

Prints:
I'm unsure yet whether I will make prints. I would rather focus my energy on painting and selling original work. In some ways I feel making prints diminishes the value of the painting. However, I realize purchasing a large painting is not in everyone's budget, so I may consider doing a limited number of prints of certain peices in the future.

Work in Progress and Detail

It really isn't cool at all to show a piece in progress; I may as well be standing in front of you naked, but I figured I would be reckless and share something half-finished. This is the peice I'm currently working on. It looks so much better in the photo than it does in real life- honestly! I was going to scrap it several times today, and I've worked on it for 2 weeks already. I just feel like I've been fighting with it, and there's so much yet to do on it. If I can stick it out I hope it will be a great peice. I'm so glad I took the photo because it has made me see it with 'new eyes'. Sometimes what you think you see isn't what's really there at all. And- for the record- the painting is crooked, it's not lopsided ;-)

Just a detail from the first peice. There is some glare in this photo- you can see it in the baby's forehead. I'll take better photos...one day, when I have time. Like, in about 22 years.

Sneak Preview

Here's a 'sneak preview' of the new work. The bad photos are what make it sneaky.

The colour is more accurate in this second photo. This painting is about 6 feet tall.

Last of the commissions

I forgot to add these: these are the last 2 peices from the 'Sleeping Baby' commission theme I did. Now that I have a show booked for November all commissions will be postponed until after the show.

Painting

I've finished a piece for the new show- and I like it.
